Sometimes a melody gets in your head and tortures you because you know you have heard it before......many years ago.
I was watching a YouTube video featuring a montage of audio clips from vintage Philadelphia radio shows from the late 60's/early 70's. A very short snippet caught my attention.What is that song??? Damn, it is driving me nuts!
After some intensive research, I resolved this burning issue. "Would I Love You"- Smokey Robinson.
This song was not a top 40 hit but it must have received some airplay in Philly. That DJ who played this song knew what he was doing. What a great song! As I listen, my mind wanders back to happy memories of simpler days when listening to the radio was a top priority on my daily "to-do" list.
It has been a long time but who would know? If nobody checks out a blog, does it exist?..I doubt it...I have had problems with my laptop at home and it just seems like a wasted effort anyway..Most people seem to check out internet links via phone and the videos I post do not show on the phone...at least not on mine or others who have checked for me.
The Golden Age of Rock &Roll, in my opinion, consists of the mid-to late 1950's into the early 1960's. The new sound was filled with raw energy and the promise of a mind-blowing musical future.
I hear this song playing through the speakers at the mall a few years back and headed straight home to find out what this song was. This was before Shazam so the quest took some effort....well worth the effort, I must say
Under the radar, underground classic, lost gem.... You can call them what you want but there are some great songs that never see the light of day. The Guess Who- The Way They Were is one one of my favorite forgotten classics. I remember the impulse buy at the "cut-out" bin in the record department of Two Guys department store in Broomall, PA.
By the mid-70's, I had discovered life beyond AM radio. There was a brave new world of music to be heard beyond the Top 40. . Deep album cuts on FM radio and the B-sides of vinyl singles introduced me the limitless possibilities out there in the musical landscape. I became a musical explorer, taking chances, opening my mind and discovering sonic gold. If I was intrigued by the artwork on a album cover or simply thought the band had a cool name, I would give it a try.
The Guess Who- The Way They Were was released in 1976 and was a collection of previously unreleased tracks from the band's most successful lineup that delivered a string of hits in the late 60's/early 70's. The tracks on this album contained the last sessions recorded before Randy Bachman left the band to create Bachman-Turner-Overdrive.
I bought the album, I listened to the album. I liked the album..I really liked the album! I listened to the album over and over. Does anybody know about this album? This is great stuff! I needed to share my new-found obsession. My friend, Rick, was already a Guess Who fan so it only seemed natural to let him in on this awesome musical secret. Over the years this album has become our personal cult classic.
Some of the tracks from The Way They Were surfaced as bonus tracks on future remastered CD's of the classic Guess Who albums but I imagine that only hardcore Guess Who fans would remember these lost gems. It is fascinating to think of what might have been if these songs got some airplay back in the day. With better timing, promotion and a little luck, these tunes could be classic Guess Who standards but...it's all a roll of the dice.
It is a very cool adventure to discover a buried musical treasure. There are tons of classic overlooked tunes out there,,,check them out!!
That devious program that recommends more videos to watch based on what you searched for previously.. I am suspicious of the forces behind this process but they seem to be correct on many occasions. Damn this intrusive technology!... Why do you know me so well??
I know that my friends and family in PA./NJ are on the verge of a snow mental-meltdown, but in Charlotte, NC, major snowstorms are rare and magical. A welcome flashback to my childhood when it seemed like the world was forced to slow down and make a snowman.
A fantastic and unexpected extended break from work..
A 3-day roller coaster of snow and sleet that at times looked like we were stuck in a snow globe with thick, animated flakes. Walking in the snow, tye-dye snowman and sculpted snow angels. Watching the Olympics and eating sweets.. The snowstorm of 2014... epic good times!
